Med spas in US cities
Choose a city for its med spas, the clinics where nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants or doctors give injectables and medical skin treatments, usually under a physician acting as medical director. HydraFacial, Morpheus8 and CoolSculpting each have a separate page for the cities whose clinics offer them. Within a city list, buttons filter it to Botox, lip and dermal fillers, microneedling, chemical peels or body contouring.

Who is allowed to inject Botox or fillers at a med spa?
It depends on the state. Toxins and fillers are prescription treatments, and state rules say which professionals may give them and under what supervision: physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and, in many states, registered nurses working under a physician’s order. Estheticians generally cannot inject. Ask for the name and title of whoever will treat you, then look up the license on the state medical board or board of nursing website. Nursys, run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, covers nurses in most states.
What is a medical director, and why ask about one?
Many states require a med spa to work under a medical director, usually a physician who sets the treatment protocols and answers for the medical side, even when nurses or other staff do the treatments. How closely that person must supervise, and whether they must ever be on site, varies by state. Ask who the medical director is, whether they see patients at the clinic and whom you call if something goes wrong after hours.
How can I tell which product is going into my face?
Ask for the brand name before treatment. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify are botulinum toxins approved by the FDA, and dermal fillers are approved for specific areas of the face or hands. Ask to see the sealed box or vial and write down the lot number, which you will need if there is ever a problem. A price far below what other clinics in the city charge is a good reason to ask where the product comes from.
How do HydraFacial, Morpheus8 and CoolSculpting differ?
HydraFacial is a brand of machine facial that cleans the pores and applies serums through a suction tip, with no needles and little downtime. Morpheus8 pushes fine needles into the skin and heats the deeper layers with radiofrequency, so some redness or swelling afterward is common. CoolSculpting is a brand of fat freezing used on areas such as the belly, the flanks or under the chin. Ask whether the clinic owns the brand-name machine, who runs it and how many sessions they suggest.
Will health insurance pay for med spa treatments?
Cosmetic treatments are almost never covered, so plan to pay for them yourself. Many med spas sell memberships or packages, and some offer payment plans through a financing company. Read the financing terms before you sign, and ask whether unused sessions in a package can be refunded or moved to another treatment.
